Jimmy works at the cemetery and believes he was adopted. Katarina, a teacher, sees ghosts. Alia, 11, just wants to dive. Marie, 20, just wants to sleep. And then there’s the girl who’s been to the dark side of the moon. In seven stories, Ingvild H. Rishøi draws the reader into a minor-key landscape populated by people who are removed from the world yet full of feelings about it. We get to know Rishøi’s characters through patient files and mountain-cabin guest books, through letters, monologues, and dialogues. Rhythmically, lyrically, and tenderly, Rishøi evokes moods and emotions – enthusiasm and longing, sorrow and unendurable pain, the confusion of youth and the joy of brief moments of reconciliation.
